With each case, Dr. Saris brings dedication, meticulous analysis, and a patient-centered approach shaped by decades as a neurosurgeon. His experience guides attorneys through medical complexities with clarity and reliability, from early case review through courtroom testimony. He is committed to making neurosurgical issues understandable and actionable for both legal teams and lay audiences.

Stephen C. Saris, MD, is a board-certified neurosurgeon with more than 35 years of experience in brain and spine surgery and over 30 years serving as a medical expert witness in complex litigation matters. He maintains an active clinical practice and is widely respected for his surgical expertise, academic credentials, and disciplined, evidence-based approach to analysis, supported by extensive medical expert consulting.

Dr. Saris completed his neurosurgical residency at Duke University Hospital and a fellowship at Harvard University / Massachusetts General Hospital, following his undergraduate and medical education at Boston University, where he graduated magna cum laude. His elite training is complemented by advanced education in neuroradiology, strengthening his ability to correlate imaging with clinical presentation, injury mechanisms, and disease progression.

Since 1985, Dr. Saris has served continuously as an attending neurosurgeon. He is currently a member of the teaching staff at Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston and at a private hospital (Sturdy Memorial Hospital) south of Boston. 

Dr. Saris treats a comprehensive range of neurosurgical conditions involving both brain and spine, including traumatic brain injury, subdural and intracerebral hemorrhage, degenerative spine disease, cauda equina syndrome, spinal fusion, epilepsy, headaches, and complex spinal instrumentation. He also brings deep expertise in neurosurgical oncology, with extensive experience managing gliomas, glioblastoma, radiosurgery, Gamma Knife procedures, and multimodal tumor therapies.

Alongside his clinical work, Dr. Saris has sustained a distinguished academic career. He currently serves as a Lecturer in Neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School and previously held faculty appointments at Brown University and Tufts University School of Medicine. His scholarly contributions include more than 30 peer-reviewed publications and multiple textbook chapters, and he has served as a peer reviewer for leading medical journals, including Cancer and the Journal of Neurosurgical Surgery.

Earlier in his career, Dr. Saris served as a Senior Staff Fellow at the National Institutes of Health (NINDS), contributing to advanced neurosurgical research and translational neuroscience. This foundation reinforces his methodical, scientifically rigorous approach to complex neurosurgical disease and injury.

Dr. Saris brings over two decades of experience as a medical expert witness, assisting attorneys in malpractice, personal injury, workers’ compensation, and other medically complex litigation through comprehensive medical expert consulting. He has conducted thousands of medical record reviews, over 1000 IMEs, has been deposed hundreds of times, and has testified in court on numerous occasions. His work frequently addresses standards of care, causation, injury mechanisms, and damages involving neurosurgical and spinal injury.

Licensed in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, Dr. Saris maintains active hospital privileges and continues to treat patients. His combination of surgical longevity, expert witness experience, elite training, academic leadership, and active clinical practice positions him as a highly credible and authoritative neurosurgical expert.
